A storm just hit. You're safe. Now what? Here's the checklist — in order of priority.
1. Safety First
- Don't enter the property if you see structural damage, downed power lines, or smell gas
- Call 911 for emergencies
- Contact your utility companies if you suspect gas leaks or electrical hazards
2. Document Everything
- Photograph and video all damage before any cleanup or repairs
- Wide shots and close-ups, inside and outside
- Include timestamps — your phone does this automatically
- Save weather reports and storm data for your area
3. Make Emergency Repairs
- Tarp damaged roofs to prevent water intrusion
- Board broken windows
- Extract standing water if possible
- Save every receipt — emergency repairs are covered by your policy
- Do NOT make permanent repairs until the carrier inspects
4. Contact Your Insurance Company
- Report the claim as soon as possible
- Get a claim number and adjuster contact
- Keep a log of every call — date, time, who you spoke with, what was said
5. Consider a Public Adjuster
The carrier sends their adjuster to protect their interests. A public adjuster protects yours. The earlier we're involved, the better we can document the damage and build the claim. In Louisiana, PA fees are flat or hourly — we discuss costs upfront during a free consultation.
