Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about public adjusters, fees, and the claims process in Louisiana.

About Public Adjusters

What is a public adjuster?

A public adjuster is a licensed insurance professional who works exclusively for policyholders — not the insurance company. We inspect damage, write estimates, and negotiate with carriers to get your claim paid fairly.

How is a public adjuster different from the insurance company's adjuster?

The carrier's adjuster works for the insurance company. Their goal is to settle the claim for the carrier. A public adjuster works for you and has a fiduciary duty to act in your best interest.

Do I need a public adjuster?

If your claim was denied, underpaid, or you're not sure you're getting a fair settlement, a public adjuster can help. We're especially valuable on complex claims where construction knowledge matters — code upgrade coverage, supplement disputes, and multi-trade repairs.

Fees & Louisiana Law

How much does a public adjuster cost in Louisiana?

Louisiana is the only state that prohibits contingency-based PA fees (La. R.S. 22:1703). We charge flat fees or hourly rates. This means we're not incentivized to drag out your claim. We discuss fees upfront during your free consultation.

Why does Louisiana ban contingency fees for PAs?

Louisiana law prohibits PAs from charging a percentage of the claim settlement. This structure actually benefits policyholders — your PA isn't motivated to inflate or delay your claim. We get paid for the work we do, not a percentage of the result.

Is the initial consultation really free?

Yes. We review your situation, explain your options, and discuss fees before you commit to anything. There's no obligation.

The Claims Process

How long does the claims process take?

It varies by carrier and complexity. Simple claims can resolve in 30-60 days. Complex claims or those going to appraisal take longer. We move fast on our end — the timeline usually depends on how quickly the carrier responds.

Can I hire a PA after I've already filed a claim?

Yes. You can engage a public adjuster at any point — before filing, during negotiation, after a denial, or even after a partial settlement. Earlier is better, but it's never too late.

I already accepted a settlement. Can I still get more?

Often, yes. Accepting a payment doesn't always waive your right to supplement the claim for additional covered items. We can review your claim and policy to determine if there's room to recover more.

What is the appraisal clause?

Most insurance policies have an appraisal clause that allows either party to demand an independent appraisal when they disagree on the amount of loss. Each side picks an appraiser, and the two appraisers pick an umpire. It's a dispute resolution mechanism that avoids litigation.

What Makes COD Different

Why is construction expertise important for a public adjuster?

Most PAs come from insurance backgrounds. They know policy language but not building codes. We know both. When a carrier disputes a line item, we cite the specific IRC section, manufacturer installation spec, or OSHA standard that requires the work. Code-backed arguments are harder to deny.
